Offa’s Dyke and Wat’s Dyke

Ruabon sits almost exactly between two of Britain's great early-medieval linear earthworks, both described in more detail in Location & Features. Substantial, walkable remains of the 8th-century Offa’s Dyke survive on the western edge of the village, part of the 177-mile National Trail that runs from Chepstow to Prestatyn, while shorter, quieter sections of the earlier Wat’s Dyke can be picked up to the east.

The Y Gardden Hillfort Circular

For a shorter, self-contained walk, the waymarked circular route through Gardden Woods to the Y Gardden hillfort is Ruabon's best local option: roughly 585 feet above sea level at its highest point, with wide views back across the village and out over the Dee Valley, on paths that are unsurfaced and can be muddy but don't require any technical navigation.

The Llangollen Canal Towpath

Heading the other direction, the flat, well-surfaced Llangollen Canal towpath links the Ruabon area to Acrefair, Cefn Mawr and the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, and is comfortably the most accessible of the walks in this guide — suitable for pushchairs and, in most sections, wheelchair users, right up to the aqueduct crossing itself.

Combining Routes for a Full Day

Because Ruabon railway station sits more or less between the two walking options, it's entirely possible to spend a morning on Offa’s Dyke and Y Gardden, come back into the village for lunch, then walk out along the canal towpath to the aqueduct in the afternoon — or simply pick one route and use the train, rather than a car, to get back to a different starting point (see Getting to Ruabon).

Practical Information

None of these routes require specialist equipment, but sturdy footwear is worth packing for the dyke and hillfort paths, which are unsurfaced. Free on-street parking is available near the village centre, with a small car park by the station; Trevor Basin, for the aqueduct end of the canal towpath, has its own pay-and-display car park.
